Cleaner Cookie Cuts

Cleaner Cookie Cuts

If your cookie cutters are sticking or pulling the dough out of shape, the issue is usually the dough temperature — not the cutter.

Once your dough is rolled out, chill it for 10–15 minutes before cutting. Cooler dough holds detail better, releases more cleanly from cutters, and helps your cookies keep their shape during baking.

When cutting, avoid pressing too hard. A firm, straight press followed by a gentle wiggle is usually enough. For intricate shapes, dipping the cutter lightly in flour between cuts works better than flouring the dough itself, which can dry it out and soften the edges.

If a piece does stick, don’t pry it out. Instead, flip the cutter over and gently tap the dough onto your surface — you’ll keep the shape intact.
